WHY???

10 Dec

So, do you ever have those moments in life where you ask yourself why something is the way it is because it makes absolutely no sense?

Yesterday I took Kaisa to the library.  After sitting through storytime, I looked up the call numbers of some books I wanted to check out and we went on our way through the rows of books.  One of the books was on the second level, and being 8 months pregnant, I opted to take the elevator.  Plus, Kaisa loves to push the buttons.  This is where the fun begins.

I let Kaisa push the button to go up.  The doors open, she runs in, and before I could help her up to push the “2″ button, she had pushed that button that says “Call For Help.”  You know, the bright red one meant for emergencies.  Ever wonder what happens when that button is pushed?  Well, now I know, and I’ll tell you.

It calls the Fire Department.

So, I hear this really loud ringing (it’s coming out of a speaker in the elevator) and then a voice saying there is an emergency in the Orem City Library elevator, south wing.  I didn’t know what to do.  Do I push it again?  There is no “cancel” button.  Should I try to talk into this speaker thing?  Can they hear me?

By now, the elevator has taken us up, so I just got off and went and got my books.

We went back down the stairs. :)

Then, as I’m passing the south wing desk, I hear the librarian say into the phone, “sorry about the false alarm.”  I just walk by and pretend not to know what is going on.

So here’s my question.  WHY ON EARTH do they put the elevator emergency button at the eye level of a toddler?????  Does anyone else see the problem here???  Honestly, people, let’s use our brains.

This is the funniest thing I have read in a long time. I think the reason it is probably because I could easily see Melynn doing the very same thing. I can only think that it was quite embarrassing for you.

Haha, Luke has set that off NUMEROUS times. No joke. I think it happens a lot.
FYI, they have it at that height for people with disabilities who are in wheelchairs, which makes sense. It just also happens to be the perfect height for our curious toddlers!

I thought about that too, but it seems that if there are buttons higher than that one, they should be at wheelchair level, too. In which case, why not put the emergency button up with those?
