Potty Training

2 Apr

Having two kids in diapers has been more annoying than I thought it would be.  I am SO sick of changing them, and even more sick of buying them!  We must spend around 70 bucks a month on diapers.  So, I’ve started thinking about potty training Kaisa and I think this summer is the time to do it.  She’s shown signs that she is ready (wanting to come into the bathroom with me and flush the toilet, asking to go potty, sitting on the potty, staying dry for several hours at a time) and I want to take this window of opportunity while it is open.

So…here’s my question for all you moms who read my blog: what method worked best for you?  I have been reading about the Diaper Free Toddlers method, and at first it didn’t appeal to me at all, because you have to let your kid run around naked from the waist down and accept the fact that you will be cleaning up their accidents off of your floor.  But the more I read about it, the better I like it.  Plus, I can keep Kaisa on the hardwood floors while we are doing it, saving my carpet…and it will be over in just a few days!  I think I will end up doing this method, if I can fully convince Nathan.  :)

Anyway, I am still open to other methods, so if you have something that really works, let me know!  I’m trying to avoid rewarding her with treats or toys each time she uses the potty, so that she doesn’t come to expect it after she is trained.  But I am open to just about any other technique.  Thanks!

I never read the diaper free technique, but I did take the diaper off of Spencer, put the potty in a centralized area, and got my carpet cleaner ready. I thought I would be doing a lot of cleaning since he would always have accidents with his pull ups, but he never had an accident! Good luck!

With Bonnie, it didn’t work with pull ups at all. I used the thick cotton panties and put plastics over them. That way she was a little more uncomfortable when she wet, which she didn’t like so much. I also used the diaper liners, which were a life saver when it came to cleaning poop out of the panties, just throw the whole liner with poop in the toilet, no problem. They have to feel the wetness on their skin to be motivated to use the toilet.
    Good Luck!

Someone told me to get them on a schedule. Every time you have to go, put them on the potty and reward them if they get anything in there. If you’re hearing toots, there’s probably poo ready to come out. When Lisa was here for a week, I put Tate on the potty whenever he’d fart and pretty soon he caught on. I have no experience, however. Good luck.

That is exactly how I potty trained all of my kids, basically accident free- and they never had to wear pull ups or diapers to bed after that either. I never read the book, or have even heard of it, but it makes sense. With pull ups, or even underwear, they forget that they aren’t wearing a diaper, but when they are naked, they remember. Good luck!
