No More Surprises
25 Jul
I think we have underestimated our 2-year-old a bit when it comes to surprises. We usually take her along when we buy her gifts, or when we buy gifts for each other, and assume that she won’t remember it or think to tell.
This morning was not very fun for me. I spent half of my day yesterday preparing some homemade baby items for Nathan’s family’s reunion auction in Summit. We were going to wake up really early this morning, make the 3 hour drive down, attend the auction and visit with family, and come back in the afternoon. Nathan decided to go out with friends last night and didn’t wake up early to finish some work he needed to get done, so we didn’t leave until around 8:15. Then, when we were almost to Mona, we got a call from his mom informing us that they were having the auction in an hour and people were going to pack up and leave. So, we turned around and I drove us home, fuming. (I did see that we made a stop at the Red Barn on the way back for some ice cream.)
I think Nathan felt badly about the whole thing, so while I was taking a nap today, he took Kaisa and went shopping. When they got back, I came down to get Kaisa lunch and Nathan was nowhere to be found. As we were eating, she started talking about a “singing book.” I remembered that I had told Nathan I wanted the Twilight movie piano music, and wondered if he might have bought it for me. I pressed her further:
“Where is the singing book?”
“It’s over there.”
“Oh. Is it for mommy?”
“Yeah, it’s for mommy.”
“Oh, did daddy get it for mommy?”
“Yeah.”
“Did dad get anything else for mommy?”
“Yeah.”
She then proceeded to finish her sandwich. Nathan came up the stairs a couple of minutes later with the Twilight “singing book” and a card for me. When I told Nathan she had spoiled the surprise, he was shocked! He told me that she was running around the store while he was picking out and buying the music, and he didn’t think she had even seen the book. Just goes to show, you can never underestimate a 2-year-old!
